Choosing Between Wedding Dresses – The Dos and Don’ts

We all have certain unspoken rules of etiquette when it comes to certain areas of our lives, and choosing a wedding dress is no different. There are certain rules that sales people and customers have to follow to make the process of fitting and choosing a wedding dress more accessible. Bridal consultants that are experienced know better than anyone how to negotiate this territory. Here are some tips on what to do and what not to do, when choosing your wedding dress.

DO express your feelings about a dress: Sometimes, we feel the need to be polite and we do our best not to offend the sensibilities of others. It is, however, vital that you be honest about what you like and what you don’t like about a dress. Your wedding consultant needs you to be as honest as possible, in order to provide the best service, and they won’t be offended if you don’t like some of their choices. The dress was not designed by the consultant, so they won’t take your rejection of the dress personally. Just be honest – this will provide a sense of trust between you and the consultant, and will give them a better platform to work on, in order to find you a dress you love.

DO keep your make-up to a minimum: It is so easy to soil a dress with make-up while trying it on, so, if possible, keep it light, or remove your make-up before trying on dresses. It is also better to match the dress to your natural complexion, and not to the make-up that you are wearing on that specific day. You can always do a make-up run later that will fit in with the dress and the occasion.

DON’T try on too many dresses: It is easy to be overwhelmed by too many dresses. While you can look at many dresses, only try on the ones you like the best. It is supposed to be fun to find your perfect dress. Don’t turn it into a stressful and daunting process by trying on everything you see.

DO get a dress in the right size: Look, most brides have dreams of losing half of their body weight to look stunning on the day, but the reality is that most brides don’t lose as much weight as they would like to. Rather choose a dress that makes you feel amazing today. The feeling you have will not change on your wedding day, even if you lose weight.

DON’T bring a huge entourage: While sharing the moment with lots of friends, your cousins and your mother can provide giggles and hilarity, choosing the dress may become confusing. When everybody starts having an opinion on what they think is best for you, you may lose your own direction, and become startled and confused. Bring a maximum of three people whose dress intuition you trust, to avoid being overwhelmed by opposing opinions.

DO remember that the quality dictates the price: The more intricate the dress is, the more you can expect to pay for it. This includes the beading, lace and the fabric used, as well as the actual quality of the workmanship.
